Hashtag Strategy: How to Use Hashtags That Actually Work
Rez H
Most Creators Get Hashtags Wrong
Copying hashtags from viral videos or using the most popular tags rarely works. Here's how to develop a hashtag strategy that increases your reach.
The Three Hashtag Types
1. Niche Hashtags (10K-100K posts):
Target your specific audience. Less competitive, higher engagement from interested viewers.
2. Medium Hashtags (100K-1M posts):
Balance between reach and competition. Good for growing accounts.
3. Broad Hashtags (1M+ posts):
High reach but extremely competitive. Use sparingly.
The Right Mix
For each post, use:
- 2-3 niche hashtags (your core audience)
- 2-3 medium hashtags (expansion)
- 1-2 broad hashtags (reach)
How to Research Hashtags
- Find competitors with similar content
- Note which hashtags appear on their best-performing posts
- Check each hashtag's view count and content type
- Save effective hashtags for future use
Hashtag Testing
Don't use the same hashtags on every post:
- Test different combinations
- Track which hashtags correlate with better performance
- Drop hashtags that don't drive results
- Build a library of proven hashtags for different content types
Platform-Specific Advice
TikTok: 3-5 hashtags. More can look spammy.
Instagram: Up to 10 hashtags. Use all spots.
YouTube: Tags matter less now, but use 5-10 relevant ones.
